Getting Selected
The 1000 Miglia receives far more applications than it has places. Here is how selection works, what the organizer asks for, and what you can do to strengthen your entry.
2027 dates as announced when entries opened. Always confirm them in the official Regulations for the edition.
1 · Is my car eligible?
The modern 1000 Miglia is open to cars built before 31 December 1957 whose model took part in at least one of the original speed races (1927–1957). Cars built after 1957 are not admitted.
Every car must hold a Registro 1000 Miglia certificate — or have applied for one when entering, in which case acceptance depends on it being issued. The Registro issues these main types:
- Participant — this actual car ran in one of the 1927–1957 races.
- Eligible — the model ran, but not this particular car.
- Guest List — a pre-1958 car of historic or sporting interest that never ran, admitted only with committee approval.
The Registro also wants the car to be original, restored to its original configuration, or carrying only changes that were documented during its period of use. Recent Regulations also ask for a FIVA identity card and/or an FIA Heritage Certificate, ACI Sport fiche or FIA HTP, plus current road registration and inspection.
2 · How selection works
The organizer accepts entries at its sole discretion. In practice, recent Regulations describe this process:
- A Selection Committee appointed by the organizer (six members for 2026) reviews every application.
- A fixed grid. For 2026 there was a maximum of 405 cars, including up to 30 Special List cars (historic interest, never raced 1927–57) and up to 25 cultural or educational entries.
- Model coefficients. Each eligible model has its own coefficient based on its period of production, class, category and its 1000 Miglia racing record. For the 2027 Centenario the organizer says every eligible model has its own coefficient on this basis. Check where your model sits.
- Balancing the field. The committee balances eras, makes and nations. Very popular models compete hard with each other for a limited number of places.
Press reports have put demand at roughly three applications for every place, with heavily represented models such as the Jaguar XK120, Porsche 356 and Austin-Healey 100 receiving dozens of applications for a much smaller number of starts. Cars with proven original-race history are reported to be accepted almost automatically.
3 · Improving your chances
Nothing guarantees a place, but these factors are within your control:
Start the Registro application now
The certificate is mandatory and takes time. Apply early so it is issued — not just pending — when the committee looks at your entry.
Prove the history
Period race entries, photographs, ownership chain, factory records. A clear, organised dossier is worth more than glossy photos of a restoration.
Authenticity over value
A modest car with documented 1000 Miglia history is reported to beat an expensive car with unknown history. Original or correctly restored specification matters.
Get the papers in order
FIVA identity card (or FIA HTP / Heritage Certificate), registration and inspection all current. An incomplete file is easy to turn down.
Think about the model
If you are choosing a car to enter, a less common eligible model with a good coefficient faces less competition than the most popular post-war sports cars.
More than one car?
Owners of several eligible cars report offering an alternative, so the committee can accept the one that fits its grid.
Build a track record
Previous 1000 Miglia starts, the organizer's Warm Up events and other FIVA regularity rallies show the committee a crew that will finish.
Know the other formulas
Recent Regulations included a reduced-fee Young entry (both crew under 30), sponsor entries with a later deadline, and a premium Guest Car formula with guaranteed acceptance. Check which exist for 2027.
Enter early and completely
Submit well before 22 December with every field and upload complete. Do not rely on the last day.
4 · Crew requirements
- Two crew per car (driver and co-driver); only verified crew may drive.
- Competition licence for each crew member — ACI Sport for Italians, or a current licence from your own country's national motorsport authority (ASN) with authorization to compete abroad.
- Medical certificate for non-competitive sport, on the organizer's template.
- Driving licence held by at least one crew member at all times, plus an International Driving Permit for foreign licences.
- Age: 14 to 85 in recent editions.
- The organizer also fits a mandatory GPS tracker to every car to monitor the route and speed.
5 · Entry costs
The 2027 price list will be in the 2027 Regulations. For reference, the 2026 Regulations listed:
| Formula | Fee (excl. VAT) | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Base | €13,000 | 4 hotel nights (double), meals, paddock access |
| Silver | €15,000 | 6 nights, priority check-in |
| Gold | €18,500 | 6 nights, single rooms |
| Young (both crew under 30) | €8,800 | Reduced fee |
| Guest Car (Platinum) | €60,000 | Guaranteed acceptance, up to 6 drivers; separate classification |
Italian VAT at 22% is added. Shipping, flights, the support crew, insurance and preparation come on top. Use the Logistics checklist to budget for them.
6 · Readiness self-check
Answer six questions to see how strong your entry file looks. This is not a prediction of acceptance — only the Selection Committee decides — but it shows where to focus.
